Last Friday, scientists found large amount of coral reef that appear to be dying from the exposure to oil. Found 5 miles away, this oil is believed to be from the BP oil spoil earlier this year, and these very sensitive organisms are dying at a very quick rate. Although they are not visibly covered in oil, the decay matter surrounding the large amounts of coral has led to the belief that it can directly be connected to the BP incident.

This article contains quite a lot of bias connected to blaming BP for the dying coral. Everything says that this oil spill "may" have caused the incident, but there is only one source that states that oil commonly seeps up from the ocean floor in the gulf. This too could be the cause of the problems. Every other contributor is stating how the oil rigs in the gulf of the sole reason that everything is dying, and that the oil spill directly caused this incident.

The decay of the coral reef along the Gulf Coast is a great example of human activities that degrade the earth. The BP accident not only affected the economy but also the shores of the Gulf, plant and animal life, and much more. The coral reef is a great natural barrier and homes to many sea creatures, and if it is destroyed that means animal life will degrade which would could possibly hurt the fish economy. I believe after seeing all the harmful affects from the BP oil spill, there should be many new laws put in place to make sure nothing like this happens again as well with preventions of oil rigs and drilling in the ocean. There also needs to be programs to help the land and wildlife hurt from this disaster. I agree with this article saying humans are making great mistakes which are causing harmful effects. This is a great way for people around us to be more concerned about the environment and help prevent another disaster and keep the earth in good conditions.
ReplyDeleteAlthough the BP oil spill may be a cause of the coral reef degrading, the lack of evidence makes it seem as if the oil spill is being blamed for something that could be a totally different cause. Many human activities destroy coral reefs and humans having been doing this for a very long time. Though there are very detrimental affects of the oil spill, some negative process happening in the gulf may not be a direct cause of the spill. More research should be done to see what is destroying the reefs so that we can try and further change what we do to the ocean to keep the much needed reefs safe.
