Greenhouse gasses are at an extreme high due to China and India's increasing use of coal power. If this keeps increasing, the effect on the Earth will be irreversible. Basically, the release of carbon dioxide is harmful but it is part of nature. It’s bad though that our contribution had lead to a tipping point. There wasn’t really any bias besides blaming the increase of greenhouse gases on China and India when it’s really everyone who is using a lot of coal and putting a lot of carbon dioxide into the air. The article was pro environmentalist. It is warning to us, but at the same time, it tells us that as a whole we aren’t doing much since there hasn’t been a decline of emission.

While the United States has cut down on practices that emit great amounts of greenhouse gases, India and China, two growing economic superpowers, have both greatly increased these practices. They are both following a trend that the United States followed before cutting back. While the rest of the world catches up, the environment will continue to degrade despite the efforts of environmentalists in the U.S.

China and India are emitting rapid amounts of greenhouse gases because they are moving closer to an Industrial Revolution and also because they are the first and second most populated countries in the world. Carbon dioxide is not harmful when the carbon cycle is kept in balance. Although China and India are releasing greenhouse gases rapidly, if many of the citizens in these two countries become educated about global warming and how to prevent it then we could decrease the release of enormous amounts of greenhouse gases.

Although carbon dioxide in fixed amounts is not harmful to the environment, the over use of coal and other industrial objects is a form of pollution that can and should be prevented. The United States was in the same situation the China and India are now in, and we have found a way to cut back of the emission of greenhouse gases. Yes China and India should be held accountable for their high rates of emission of this greenhouse gas, but full eradication of the use of coal is something that is impossible.
ReplyDeleteIt is not surprising that in countries that focus purely on furthering themselves in a purely economic sense would go about releasing the most carbon dioxide and coal emissions. Unfortunately, they are still part of the world and their problems affect our world. They should be held to the same standard that other countries with strictures on environmental damage. Or at least, their should be a limit to their economic growth which is at the expense of the environment.
ReplyDeleteIt is true that China and India's increasing dependence on coal has caused carbon dioxide emissions to exceed the projected rates, I agree with Stephanie that it is mainly due to their becoming developed countries. The United States also faced a period of extremely high dependence on coal, and we have cut back as alternative sources of energy are discovered. China and India's impact has been much more noticeable because they are much larger countries. Hopefully, like the United States has done, they will take steps towards alternative sustainable energy sources. Because they have such large populations, making the same changes percentage-wise as the U.S. has done should represent a significant decrease in global carbon dioxide levels. What the article did not mention, was what other developed countries can do in order to help them decrease their dependence on coal. Working internationally is definitely a very large step, but could have a very large impact on the quality of the earth as a whole.
ReplyDeleteChina and India are primary carbon-dioxide and greenhouse gases contributers in the earth's atmosphere and is increasing with its coal use. Their impact on the earth is much more great the the US's, as I agree with Nikhil, because we found more resources to use. I believe that we are the main cause of global warming and the excess amount of carbon in the air, and yes there is naturally carbon in the atmosphere, but the amount we are contributing is not a positive effect. I disagree with this article, because I believe we are all the main cause and we aren't just the tipping point but the entire rising action to that point. China and India should find different resources or procedures or cut down on the quantity to reduce global warming.
