This article is about the proposal coast barrier called the Ike Dike in Galveston, Texas by Ford Atkinson with Fox Houston. Hurricane season is coming up and the Texas coastal city needs protection from high winds and waters coming. This article gave views and points of proponents and opponents on the barrier and how it would affect them. Proponnents, Tilman Fertitta and Bob Mitchell, believed the cost of the barrier would be just a fraction of the cost of damage from another hurricane without the building of the barrier in the city. Currently, the proposal is still under examination.

This article was written by Ford Atkinson, reporter for Fox News Houston, on Monday September 13, 2010.

The opinions were offered at the end of the article. The bias of the article was positive but they gave the views of the opponents. This is a pro-environmentalist trying to save the city from the damage which could hurt the health of the environment.

  1. As long as building the dike does not have detrimental effects on the environment, I think this is a good idea. The cost of the dike would definitely be worth preventing hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage from a major storm. Many people were affected and hurt by Ike and Rita, and if the city can do anything to prevent these damages in the future, then I agree that the dike would be a positive addition to the Texas coast.

  2. I think building the dike would be very beneficial to the Galveston because it would help protect homes and businesses from future hurricanes, like hurricane Ike. This natural disaster was very detrimental to the entire city. The cost of damages was extremely high, and there is no doubt another hurricane similar to Ike will strike again. The dike would be an efficient use of money because it would prevent many of the harmful effects of hurricanes and better protect the people and environment.

  3. Living in Texas, we have seen the negative effects of hurricanes. I think that the addition of the Dike in Galveston would create protection for a city that is on its last leg. Natural disasters cause pain, expensive damages, and lives lost, and if there is a way to prevent any of these things happening then as a society we should take the opportunity to fix it. Preventing disasters is a lot cheaper then dealing with the hurricane after it hits. This would be a positive change for the hurricane prone city.

  4. The Ike Dike could potentially save a lot of money even though the initial cost seems like a lot; it is a lot less than the costs of damage after hurricanes. I think that if the Dike proves to be useful to protecting Galveston then it should be built. Although it should only be built as long as it does not harm the environment and cause more problems than it is fixing.
